Baker Point Solar is the first solar site in Maryland to be certified pollinator-friendly. Baker Point Solar produces enough electricity annually to power the equivalent of more than 2,000 homes. National Geographic and Monumental Sports (owner of Capital One Arena) purchase the electricity, matched with renewable energy credits, through WGL Energy Services.
This is not a typical solar site. In addition to producing energy, the site hosts bee hives that each produce roughly 30 pounds of honey annually. Tended by a University of Maryland honeybee biologist, pollinators forage for nectar and pollen throughout the site. Nine different species of native long-stemmed and short-growing flowers and warm-season grasses populate the land.
